How to Make a Bike Listing

Below is a list of the minimum necessary pieces of information for selling a bike on Craigslist, or wherever bikes are sold.

For the title include:
  • The brand and model.
  • The frame size, measured in centimeters from the center of bottom bracket to the seatpost clamp or from the center of the seatpost clamp to the center of the headtube. Be sure to specify in the body which measurement you made as either "seat tube length" or "top tube length" respectively.
  • Interesting extra information that can be stated in one or two words like the brand of the drivetrain or the overall condition of the bike.
  • Example: "Surly Cross-Check, 54 cm, Pimp Status"
For the body:
  • Reiterate the size, age, brand and model of the bike.
  • Name your price and whether it's negotiable. Expect people to haggle with you, that's a part of game.
  • List all add-on components beyond what the stock bike came with (i.e. Planet Bike fenders or Continental GP4000 tires). Make sure this is a list, not a line of text.
  • Separate paragraphs by hitting return twice to make a blank line.
  • If listing on-line, ad a link to the bike manufacturer's website.
  • Note all damage and how severe it is. It might also be good to note when the bike was last serviced and by whom.
  • Remember you can't have too much information.
For the picture:
  • Make sure the bike is clean and well lit. Choose a bland background so as not to distract from the product.
  • Take a shot of the full bike and add shots of different angles, details, or damage.
This is just a rough guide for selling a bike. Putting a little extra work into the listing ad will save you time answering customer questions later. Feel free to get creative with your listing, just make sure to include the basics above.
