How to get a Thru-Axel Wheel on a Regular Trainer

Having trouble getting your new thru-axel bike onto your stationary trainer?

Don't want to buy a special adaptor?

Have no fear, for I have the solution.

First, take off the thru-axel handle with an M5 or M4 allen key.

Then, take a normal rear-wheel quick release, and use a hacksaw to cut it in half.

The quick release is a perfect fit for the inner diameter of most thru-axels, so once you screw the drive-side nut back on, you can stick the QR back into the T-A and there you go.

See? Stick the halved quick release inside the thru-axel drill-out and you can mount the bike in the trainer, no prob. Once you have the trainer clamped down there's no risk of damage.

BONUS THING!

In the days before thru-axels, when mountain bikers needed stiffer wheels but didn't know how best to go about achieving that, there existed over-sized quick releases. Observe:

Pretty nifty, huh?
