I'm not the biggest Blackburn fan. I think their stuff is over-engineered and prone to failure. See my review of the
Flea.
However, here is a review for the
Central 100 written by Margaret S.
I've been thinking about it, and I think you should consider changing your tune w/r/t Blackburn's lights. My Central 100 is actually really good, I've decided! I've been reading around (slow morning here), and it appears that the earlier versions of the Flea were crappy for the reasons you brought up, but I've realized that they addressed the no low battery warning issue in both the Flea and the Central models - mine has a little indicator light at the top with colors to indicate fuel level: green for 75-100%, orange for 25-75, and red for 25% and below.
The brightness was startling to me at first, but now that I'm more used to it, it's pretty nice having a super bright light that actually lights up the road in addition to warning cars of my presence.
And I really like the mounting mechanisms. It's just a silicon mount that can attach to any bar or mounting point super easily, without tools, but in contrast to other silicon mounts, you don't have to take it off all the time in order to take off the light. (I guess you're leaving the mount on the bike for people to steal that way, and it would kinda suck if the mount were taken, but the way I see it there's way less chance of a mount being taken without the light.) And then the light itself attaches to the mount via a metal clip that is handy for attaching to other places, too. Pretty versatile.
It's also small enough to not be a bother to take off and carry around in your pocket, but really packs a powerful punch for being relatively small. And it's easy to turn on, even with gloves (no searching for a tiny power button) because you just press the front face in. Also, because you have to press kinda hard, you don't have to worry about it accidentally turning on while it's in your bag or your pocket.
I've become increasingly impressed by my little light. It's more expensive than lights I usually buy, but still affordable ($34), and actually way more convenient to charge than I originally thought it'd be, since it just uses a mini usb, which I also use to charge my phone. I'll be sad when I inevitably lose it in 3 weeks.
