In bike news I recently got my Illinois Driver's License, which I know doesn't sound bike-related -and it isn't- but what is bike related is the test I had to take while I was there.
Of the 20 questions I had to answer to be approved to handle a 3500 pound vehicle at 65mph through the streets of Chicago, there were 2 that directly mentioned cyclists and pedestrians! Now this is a big deal because I remember last time I took the driver's test in Iowa (12 years ago) the only non-motor-vehicle related question went: "If you see a pedestrian walking with a cane and you manage to hit him//her but leave the cane standing (spinning) in place, how many points do you get?"
The Illinois question went something like, "When you see a cyclist in your lane going slower than you and being annoying because you're busy and the road is made for cars, do you hit them?" The correct answer in multiple choice format is "No", as I found out.
In real bike news, the Chicago media world is covering bikes like bees cover honey.
Here's the link to the first bike feature of the year for WGN: cameras: http://wgntv.com/2014/03/13/bike-cameras-the-new-protective-gear/
Here's a link to a Tribune article about bike cameras: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2014-02-25/news/ct-bike-cameras-met-20140225_1_standard-bike-lanes-cameras-gopro
Oh, and here's one more about bike crap you can buy: http://wgntv.com/2013/07/01/midday-fix-proper-bicycle-fit-tips-from-running-away-multisport/
Why am I posting these three links?
Because they're all about me!!!! Formerly humble bike blogger Scott Bender is now a household name and big-deal movie star!!!!
If I find the time in my busy schedule I'll post some bike tips or whatever I do on this blog in a few days, or I'll have my assistant do it.
Also, I'm looking for an assistant who will accept proximity to stardom in lieu of material payment. (Post your contact info in the comments)
Above is a video I sent to Nancy Loo about my commute. In it you see that the roads in Chicago kind of suck and people like to blow through red lights and stop signs (myself included).
